What’s happening?

Queensland’s blood and plasma supplies have reached critical lows. Lifeblood is appealing for urgent help from plasma donors in Townsville and O-type blood donors across the state.

Why it matters

“O negative is essential for trauma and unknown emergencies. Plasma is equally vital for cancer, immune, and clotting disorders,” said spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh. “We’re seeing the highest rates of appointment cancellations since June last year.”

Local Impact

Townsville is being asked to supply 200 plasma donations this week — a crucial need as Lifeblood strives to meet nationwide medical demands. “If you’re healthy, you can help. Plasma donation is safe, and you can donate more often,” Belinda explained.

By the Numbers

  • 2,000 O-type blood donors needed in QLD

  • 200 plasma donations needed in Townsville

  • Lifeblood distributes 10,000 products daily
