What’s happening?

On Friday 16 May 2025, Townsville joins the national movement encouraging primary school students to walk to school as part of Walk Safely to School Day. This community-led event is in its 26th year.

Why it matters

Walking boosts children’s physical and mental development. “Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day,” said Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. “We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day.”

He also noted, “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.”

Local Impact

Schools across Townsville are rallying parents and P&C groups to support healthy walking routes and host breakfast events.

By the Numbers

  • 1 in 4 Aussie kids live with obesity (ABS 2017–18)
  • 60 minutes daily exercise helps prevent disease and boost learning
  • Townsville’s growing school zones will benefit from less traffic and safer paths

Zoom In

Townsville schools can use the event to begin year-round walking initiatives and family engagement in road safety.

Zoom Out

National Walk Safely to School Day is more than a moment—it’s a movement towards healthier communities and better infrastructure.
