What’s happening?

Local partners gathered at Townsville University Hospital on 8 August 2025 to celebrate the official launch of the Universal Aftercare program in the region, marking a milestone in suicide prevention efforts. The program, which began operating in Townsville on 3 March 2025, offers free, person-centred support for people aged 15 years and older who have experienced a suicidal crisis or attempted suicide.

The launch brought together representatives from the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS), Wellways Australia, local health providers, and community members, including people with lived experience. The event highlighted the power of collaboration in creating safer, more supportive systems for people in distress.

Why it matters

Recovering from a suicidal crisis can be complex and requires timely, tailored support. Universal Aftercare provides ongoing help during the critical months after such a crisis, assisting people to navigate services, build safety plans, and reconnect with what matters most. The program is designed to strengthen the local mental health safety net and ensure that those most in need are met with compassionate, accessible care.

Local impact

Universal Aftercare in Townsville is jointly funded by the Queensland and Commonwealth governments. It is delivered by Wellways Australia in partnership with THHS and NQPHN, with referrals currently made exclusively by THHS clinical staff. Pathways have been developed closely with these partners to prioritise timely and person-centred care.

NQPHN CEO Ben Tooth said the program’s success rests on its emphasis on relationships and shared responsibility. “Universal Aftercare is a program that centres on connection and partnerships,” Mr Tooth said.
“Our partnerships with the Townsville Hospital and Health Service and Wellways reflect a combined commitment to delivering services with heart, integrity, and a person-first approach.”

Wellways General Manager for Queensland, Zoe Evans, said the launch represented more than the start of a service. “It’s a recognition of everyone who has walked alongside us to bring this to life,” Ms Evans said.
“Wellways is proud to stand with the Townsville community in creating safer, more supportive systems for people in distress.”

THHS Chief Executive Kieran Keyes said the introduction of Universal Aftercare was a meaningful step in bolstering mental health services in the region. “THHS is proud to mark the official launch of this vital new aftercare service today, delivered in partnership with NQPHN and Wellways,” Mr Keyes said.

“This initiative ensures that individuals who have experienced a suicidal crisis are met with timely, compassionate support as they begin their recovery journey. “By working closely with NQPHN and Wellways, we’re strengthening the safety net for our community and reaffirming our commitment to accessible, high-quality mental health care for those who need it most.”
