What’s happening?
Magnetic Island Ferries has launched a new online booking system for travel between Townsville and Magnetic Island.
The platform was developed by Queensland software company FerryHawk and launched on 28 July 2026.
Customers can now make and manage passenger, vehicle and freight bookings online for the first time.
Why it matters
Magnetic Island Ferries runs the only freight service between Townsville and Magnetic Island, alongside hourly ROPAX passenger and vehicle sailings.
Previously, online bookings were limited to standard vehicles. Staff handled freight bookings and commuter passes manually.
The operator wanted greater capability from its technology while creating a simpler process for customers and staff.
The new platform includes:
- One self-service portal for passenger, vehicle and freight bookings.
- A hosted and supported system built for ROPAX ferry operators.
- Regular software updates that can add new features over time.
- Digital travel passes that replace paper commuter cards.
- Connected customer, payment and booking services, replacing separate systems.
Local Impact
The upgrade gives Townsville residents, Magnetic Island commuters and businesses more control over their ferry arrangements.
Commercial operators can manage freight travel online, helping them plan the movement of goods and equipment to the island.
Regular commuters can access their travel passes digitally, while other customers can manage bookings without relying on manual processing.
By the numbers
- FerryHawk delivered the standard platform within three months, including training and the transfer from the former system.
- The single portal covers three travel types, including passengers, vehicles and freight.
- The new booking system officially launched in Townsville on 28 July 2026.
Zoom In
FerryHawk completed the transfer on time and within budget, with little to no disruption for customers.
The Queensland company supported staff training and change management throughout the move from the previous booking system.
Its experience with Australian ferry operations helped the company address the practical needs of the Townsville to Magnetic Island route.
The upgrade also reflects Riverside Marine’s continued investment in its marine businesses. Riverside Marine is the parent company of Magnetic Island Ferries.
“We are constantly improving our customer experience to give people more choice and flexibility,” Riverside Marine director Angus Campbell said. “Our new booking system is just the first step. It provides the technological foundation we need for future automation, keeping us at the forefront of innovation.”
Zoom Out
The Townsville to Magnetic Island ferry link supports daily commuting, tourism, vehicle travel and the movement of commercial goods.
Combining these services within one booking system creates a clearer process for travellers and businesses using the route.
It also gives Magnetic Island Ferries more scope to update its services as customer needs change.
What To Look For Next?
Magnetic Island Ferries plans to use the platform to support future automation and further service improvements.
New features may provide more choice and flexibility for passengers, commuters and commercial customers.
