Local hairstylist making waves in Townsville’s wedding scene

Mikayla & Neil captured at the ABIA awards by Evokestudios photography.

What’s happening?

Hairstyles By Mikayla has become one of Queensland’s top mobile wedding hairstylists after earning major recognition at the Australian Bridal Industry Academy Awards.

This achievement comes after a tough start in June 2024 when Mikayla and her family moved to Townsville. They faced long delays to their home build in Alligator Creek and lived in a tent on their property through a Townsville summer and wet season.

Through these challenges, Mikayla committed to grow Hairstyles ByMikayla into the most respected and professional mobile wedding hairstyling business. She focused on giving each bride a positive and memorable experience.

She started with zero clients in a new region Gold Coast, 1400 kilometres from the place she once called home.

Why it matters

The ABIA award is a significant milestone. The selection criteria are strict and reserved for those who have achieved a certain client satisfaction rating.

As stated, “It is the clients who decide the winers, not ABIA.” This result highlights Mikayla’s skill, consistency and reputation in the wedding sector.

Local impact

Mikayla says she is grateful for the support from the Townsville community and her 2025 brides. She looks forward to the new wedding season and hopes to create hairstyles for many more couples.

Her story shows resilience, passion and the joy she finds in serving her local community. As she builds her home and her business, she stays dedicated to making every bride feel beautiful and special on their wedding day.

By the numbers

Here’s the thing, these points show the scale of her rise.

  • In only 18 months she grew from a handful of clients to an award winning business.

  • ABIA selection required a minimum client satisfaction rating of 95 percent.

  • She placed 4th in Queensland and made the state’s top 5 mobile hairstylists, the only North Queensland finalist

Mikayla pushed through months of tent living on her Alligator Creek property.

She kept her focus on her brides and their experience through these testing conditions. That commitment helped her build trust quickly in a new community.

Zoom out

Townsville’s wedding scene is growing, and Mikayla’s award result shows the strength of local talent rising in the region. Her fast progress reflects community support and strong word of mouth.

What to look for next?
