What’s happening?

Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) has pledged to support the $240 million Townsville Port Expansion Project, a key element of the Unlock the North priority.

The project will involve constructing two common-user berths, seawalls, and trunk infrastructure to meet growing demands for larger vessels and enhance supply chain capabilities.

Why it Matters

Without this expansion, there is a risk of the port’s capacity falling behind the increasing trade demand, particularly for critical minerals and renewable energy exports.

The Outer Harbour Development is vital for the sustained growth of trade in North Queensland and ensuring the region remains competitive on a global scale.

Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith welcomed KAP’s commitment, stating, “Townsville North Queensland contributes more than $22 billion to Queensland’s economy annually.

It’s only fair that this wealth is reinvested into our region to fuel sustained growth and opportunity.” She highlighted that the expansion will solidify North Queensland’s status as a global trade hub, particularly benefiting the mining, agricultural, and renewable energy sectors.

Hinchinbrook MP and KAP deputy leader Nick Dametto also stressed the port’s importance, calling it “a gateway for Australia,” noting that the expansion will unlock significant economic potential for North Queensland.

He added that KAP’s focus on generational infrastructure aims to extend beyond short-term planning, paving the way for long-term economic security.

KAP’s candidate for Townsville, Margie Ryder, pointed out the broad impact of the port’s expansion, particularly in terms of job creation.

“Townsville’s port handles over 30 commodities, supports Defence and cruise facilities, and has the potential to create thousands of jobs,” she said.

The expansion, she added, is a “game changer” for local industries.

Zoom Out

This project isn’t just about boosting trade. It also aligns with KAP’s broader commitment to North Queensland, focusing on developing infrastructure that will have lasting impacts.

The call for all political parties to take action underlines the importance of bipartisan support to secure the future prosperity of the region.

Local Impact

With the port handling more than 30 commodities and supporting critical industries like Defence and renewable energy, this expansion is expected to create high-paying jobs and drive the local economy forward, benefitting not only Townsville but the broader North Queensland region.

What to Look for Next

This announcement sets the stage for future political discourse, where other parties may also need to make their commitments clear.

The next steps include ensuring the funding and timelines are locked in, with community and industry stakeholders keen to see progress.
