What’s happening?
Drones will fly over a Central Queensland mine on Thursday 24 July 2025 to spread treatment after fire ants were detected earlier this month. The National Fire Ant Eradication Program confirmed it has already treated all identified nests and finished targeted surveillance. Officers have been visiting the community, giving advice on how to spot and report fire ants.
Why it matters?
Genetic checks show the ants came from the South East Queensland infestation. This proves how easily they can move with soil or equipment. Everyone has a biosecurity duty to know the risks, check current zones and follow movement controls to stop the spread.
Local impact
he program has been working closely with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Broadmeadow Coal Mine. Marni Manning, General Manager, Operations, said, “We have been working with the team at BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Broadmeadow Coal Mine since the detection and will continue to do so for some time. Thanks to the efforts of the National Fire Ant Eradication Program, all known nests have been treated, and significant progress has been made in surveillance.”
By the numbers
-
Drone treatment starts on 24 July 2025 after earlier ground treatment of nests.
-
Two community sessions will be held 23 and 24 July from 10 am to 1 pm.
-
Reports of suspect ants should be made within 24 hours by calling 132 ANT (13 22 68).

“This week, we will be treating the mine site using drone technology, which allows for fast and effective eradication treatment,” Ms Manning said. Drones can reach wide areas quickly and keep staff safe.
Zoom out
The risk is not just local. “I encourage everyone sourcing materials that can carry fire ants from within fire ant biosecurity zones to ensure their suppliers follow fire ant safe practices. This is the best way to stop fire ants from spreading,” Ms Manning said.
What to look for next?
Program staff will continue to work with the mine and community. Residents are urged to keep checking their yards and local areas for nests and to report any suspect ants online or by phone.
