What’s Happening

Dancenorth Australia is joining the inaugural AusArt Day,  Thursday, 23 October, inviting the community to make a donation and support the art that inspires them. Spearheaded by Creative Australia, AusArt Day is a new nationwide movement designed to celebrate and grow arts philanthropy across the country.

For more than 40 years, Dancenorth Australia has connected hearts, minds and bodies through dance and movement across Gurambilbarra and Thul Garrie Waja (Townsville) and regional Queensland. The company has become an epicentre for creativity in the North, drawing artists from around the world to create and collaborate in Townsville’s unique landscape.

Why It Matters

Dancenorth’s work extends beyond performance. It’s about connection, curiosity, and community. “We do not create art for art’s sake. We create to connect, to celebrate, to enquire, to express, to explore,” the company said.

Donations this AusArt Day help Dancenorth continue to deliver world-class contemporary dance, nurture independent artists, and bring the joy of movement to people of all ages and backgrounds.

By the Numbers

• Dancenorth has been creating and touring from Townsville for 40 years, shaping Queensland’s contemporary dance scene.

• More than 2,800 students take part each year in Dancenorth’s free Regional Workshop Tour across North Queensland.

• Every donation over $2 is fully tax-deductible, helping support accessible, community-based arts programs.

Funds raised will power artistic development programs for dancers and choreographers across Australia and New Zealand, expand free and low-cost workshops, and continue Dancenorth’s outreach to regional schools. The goal is to build stronger, happier and more connected communities through creativity and self-expression.

AusArt Day aims to unite Australians in celebrating the role of art in shaping culture and connection. By encouraging donations, it highlights that arts giving is not just charity—it’s an investment in a vibrant, creative future.

Local Impact

For Townsville, supporting Dancenorth means supporting a vital cultural institution that brings world-class artistic experiences to the North. Every contribution helps keep dance accessible and keeps Townsville at the heart of Australia’s contemporary arts landscape.
