What’s Happening?

Brighter Lives, the official charity of Townsville Hospital and Health Service, is marking 35 years of impactful work in 2024.

Since its inception, the foundation has donated vital equipment, delivered meaningful projects, and funded crucial research for north Queensland.

As part of the celebrations, the foundation is highlighting its 120 volunteers and the role they play in supporting hospital services across Townsville, Kirwan, Charters Towers, and Home Hill.

Why It Matters?

Volunteers like Karen Inch, Brighter Lives’ longest-serving volunteer, are at the heart of the foundation’s efforts.

Karen has dedicated 40 years to supporting patients, even before Brighter Lives existed.

Her journey began in 1984 when she helped patients at the Special Clinics Department in Townsville, offering comfort and nourishment during long wait times.

Since then, her passion has grown, particularly in serving those in the Oncology Unit, where she continues to provide support and a compassionate presence.

By the Numbers

  • 40 years: Karen Inch’s volunteer service
  • 120 volunteers: supporting hospitals across north Queensland in 2024

Zoom In

Karen’s volunteering began at a time when north Queensland didn’t have an oncology service.

Specialists flew in weekly to attend to patients, leaving many to wait long hours for care. Karen, known for her kindness, helped comfort patients with home-baked treats and warm conversations.

Reflecting on this, Brighter Lives shared, “Karen was the first to put up her hand and help,” showing her initiative and compassion.

Karen’s commitment extended to the Kirwan Ladies Hospital, where she assisted with administrative tasks.

Now, she has returned to her original passion of supporting oncology patients. “Karen has continued to be a pillar of strength for those waiting for their appointment,” says Brighter Lives, highlighting her enduring commitment.

Zoom Out

Volunteers play a critical role in Brighter Lives’ mission to improve healthcare services in north Queensland.

From driving courtesy buggies to offering a friendly face and listening ear, their work makes a real difference.

As the charity looks to the future, its work would not be possible without the ongoing support of dedicated volunteers and community donations.

Local Impact

Karen’s story is one of many that exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism in north Queensland.

Brighter Lives’ volunteers have provided over three decades of service, making hospitals more welcoming and ensuring that patients feel cared for during vulnerable times.

What to Look for Next?

Brighter Lives is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a Giving Day on 24 October 2024.

The foundation is asking the community to help continue its mission of supporting healthcare through fundraising or donations.

Every contribution helps fund equipment, projects, and research to benefit north Queensland locals.
