What’s Happening?
The TechnologyOne Townsville Tip Off will take place in Townsville from 17 to 20 September. Games, activations and family activities will run across four days.
The Townsville Times secured an exclusive Q&A with Australian basketball great Lauren Jackson, the league’s Chief of Strategy. She discussed the event, Queensland talent, the Opals, the World Cup and opportunities for regional players.
Why It Matters
This year’s Tip Off extends beyond the games, with family activities planned throughout the four-day program. Its return also brings several partners together to support local communities.
“It’s incredibly exciting to head back to Townsville for the TechnologyOne Townsville Tip Off. This year, the team have really taken this event to a new level. Games will take place across four days, with activations and activities for the entire family. It is perfect for the start of the school holidays.
“We’re grateful for the support of the Queensland Government, Tourism and Events Queensland, Townsville Enterprise and Townsville City Council. They have helped bring this event to life for a second year. Our partner, TechnologyOne, has also helped take it to the next level.
“This event is a testament to what we can achieve with strong partnerships and a united vision to make a positive impact in local communities,” Jackson said.
Local Impact
Community participation is central to the event’s work across North Queensland. Through She Hoops, clinics are being delivered for young players in several regional communities.
“Community and inspiring the next generation is at the heart of everything we do. We’ve partnered with She Hoops to deliver community clinics across Cairns, Port Douglas, Burdekin and Ingham. We want as many people as possible to experience the joy and opportunity basketball presents, both on and off the court,” Jackson said.

Queensland players will have a strong presence throughout the Townsville Tip Off. Jackson highlighted several names from across the state, including a Townsville local competing at the World Cup.
“Across the league, we have world-class talent from around Australia. Being in North Queensland is an opportunity to celebrate local legends who have performed at the highest levels. Monique and Cheyenne Bobongie and Jess McDowell-White are among the many Queenslanders to keep an eye on across the Tip Off. Our reigning champions, the Townsville Fire, I know will come out strong. Alex Fowler is currently competing in the World Cup and is a Townsville local. She’s paving the way for talent across North Queensland,” Jackson said.
The tournament will also mark the first court appearance for the Tasmania Jewels. Jackson said she was looking forward to seeing the new team play.
“It will be the first time the Tasmania Jewels take to the court. I’m looking forward to seeing them in action ahead of the season starting in Tassie on 15 October,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s comments also covered the Opals and their World Cup campaign. She expressed confidence in the team and its newly appointed captain, Ezi.
“The Opals are off to a great start. With Ezi named the new captain, I have a lot of faith in her leadership style and how she supports the team,” Jackson said.
Beyond the current squad, Jackson praised the commitment shown by Australia’s younger basketball players. She also said court shortages were making it difficult to meet growing participation demand.
“Their energy and hunger to give 110 per cent is most encouraging. Basketball participation continues to grow across Australia. However, we know we cannot meet the current demand because of court shortages. As the longest-running women’s league, it is important for us to connect directly with the next generation. We must also ensure there are strong pathways to the elite level. We know how important community and participation are. It is amazing to see young people pick up a basketball and show up for themselves, their friends and their families. The Brisbane 2032 Olympics are just six years away. I have no doubt the Opals squad will include talent working hard across our communities right now,” Jackson said.

The TechnologyOne Townsville Tip Off will start next week. The program will include four days of basketball, activations and activities for families during the school holidays.
