What’s happening?

Elvis, one of the last direct descendants of the legendary Carandotta horses, will make a symbolic return to the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo this August. While he won’t be bucking, he’ll be a star attraction, honouring a bloodline that helped shape Australia’s rodeo history. The 2025 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will run from 8–10 August at Buchanan Park, with tickets on sale now.

Why it matters

This marks a powerful nod to the region’s rodeo roots. Elvis carries a bloodline linked directly to the legendary Carandotta Station horses, immortalised by George Ah One’s 1959 droving journey to the first Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo. His daughter, Little Egypt, is an 8-time Australian Bucking Horse of the Year — making this a moment of rare cultural and sporting significance.

Local Impact

Townsville and North Queensland rodeo fans can witness a living legend, reinforcing the shared history between outback Queensland and the coastal regions. Eddie Gill, stock contractor and custodian of the Carandotta legacy, said, “We’re proud to bring not just Elvis, but exceptional stock for every division — juniors included. Every rider deserves a chance to shine.”

By the numbers

  • In 1959, George Ah One walked over 200 km from Carandotta Station to Kalkadoon Park with a mob of horses.

  • Elvis’ daughter, Little Egypt, won Australian Bucking Horse of the Year eight times.

  • Elvis joins a list of 8 legendary horses and bulls honoured in rodeo history, including Chainsaw, Midnight, Tornado, and Man Hater.

Zoom In

Carandotta Station near the NT border produced horses forged by harsh terrain and hard work. Under George Ah One’s leadership, their transformation from mustering mounts to rodeo stars built a reputation unmatched in Australia. The Ah One family’s legacy was recognised with induction into the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre Hall of Fame.

Zoom Out

This celebration of Elvis is part of a broader effort to honour rodeo heritage and ensure elite stock are available for both junior and open events. Thanks to Gill Bros’ support, every competitor will face animal athletes bred for brilliance.

What to look for next?

The Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships will also take place during the three-day event, with support from the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland. Rodeo fans can expect unforgettable moments of grit, glory, and red dirt pride as Australia’s richest rodeo charges into the arena.
