What’s happening?
The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has launched its annual Christmas Blood Blitz, urging Townsville residents to donate blood or plasma between December 18 and January 2.
The campaign is calling for 200 plasma donors from Townsville to help meet critical patient needs during the holiday season.
Why it Matters?
Blood and plasma donations are essential for patients with immune conditions, cancer, trauma injuries, and women in childbirth.
The festive season often sees a decline in donations as routines are disrupted, making it crucial to ensure a steady supply of lifesaving blood products.
Belinda Smetioukh, Lifeblood spokesperson, said: “It is vital to have a constant stream of donors to ensure patient needs are met.”
Local Impact
Townsville residents are being asked to step up and give back by donating plasma at the local Lifeblood donor centre.
Lifeblood centres will remain open throughout the holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, offering flexible opportunities to give back. “The most meaningful item you can put on your Christmas ‘to do’ list today is to lock in a blood or plasma donation and keep it,” Belinda added.
By the Numbers
- 200 plasma donors are needed from Townsville between December 18 and January 2.
- Queensland requires over 3,500 donors statewide during this period.
- Plasma donations are used to treat a wide range of medical conditions, benefiting patients across the community.
