THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY’S WARTIME PRESENCE AT HMAS MAGNETIC

During wartime, the Royal Australian Navy had a sizable presence at the site of HMAS Magnetic, with a total of 500 personnel residing in 50 buildings. This effort was further aided by the Women’s Royal Australian Navy who began working at the base in late 1942.

HONOURING HEROES

As a result of remarkable efforts led by the Townsville Maritime Museum, Mayor Jenny Hill unveiled a commemorative plaque in recognition of their service.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill, a long-time supporter of the Maritime Museum, expresses her gratitude to Dr. Robert de Jong, Mr. Keith Owen, and the entire team.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is also thanked for its support through the “Saluting their Service” grant.
