What’s happening?
Crime Stoppers Queensland, together with the Queensland Police Service, launched the Illegal Firearms Campaign on 19 March and named Townsville as a key focus.
Why it matters
People often hide unregistered firearms in plain sight, and those closest to them are usually the ones who know. “We know that the people most likely to have vital information about illegal firearms are often current or former partners, family members, or close friends,” said Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO David Hansen. “We’re urging them to come forward.”
Local Impact
Crime Stoppers is encouraging Townsville residents to speak up safely. “Crime Stoppers offers a safe, anonymous way to report illegal firearms without giving a name or getting involved — it’s 100 per cent anonymous,” said Mr Hansen. “Illegal firearms in the wrong hands can be devastating.”
By the Numbers:
-
260,000: Estimated illegal firearms circulating in Australia.
-
3,290: Firearm-related crimes reported in Queensland in 2024.
-
1,055: Gun licences revoked across the state last year.
Zoom In
Queensland Police Detective Inspector Brad Phelps reinforced the campaign’s urgency: “Even one illegal firearm in the wrong hands can have devastating consequences. Your identity is protected, and your information could be the key to preventing a tragedy.”
Zoom Out
The National Firearms Amnesty allows people to surrender firearms without penalty at participating police stations or licensed dealers. Those caught with illegal guns outside the amnesty could face up to 13 years in prison and fines reaching $66,725.
