What’s Happening?

The Salvation Army in Townsville is calling on locals to support this year’s Red Shield Appeal.

The appeal is raising vital funds for people across Townsville and surrounding areas who are doing it tough.

The 2026 appeal was announced locally on 21 May. It will culminate in Red Shield Weekend on May 30 and 31.

Major Petra Dorman, leader of The Salvation Army at Townsville, said many locals are under serious pressure.

“We know that people are doing it really tough in our community right now, as global uncertainty coupled with further increases in the cost of living locally puts an incredible strain on individuals and families. We know that many are on the edge of breaking point as they struggle to make ends meet,” Major Dorman said.

“That is why we are calling on those in Townsville to dig deep, get involved in the Red Shield Appeal, and be the hope our community desperately needs right now.”

Why It Matters

The Red Shield Appeal helps fund The Salvation Army’s local work with people facing hardship.

This includes support for immediate needs and longer-term wellbeing.

Funds have helped provide emergency financial assistance during times of crisis.

This support has included petrol vouchers, emergency food relief, food parcels, pantry items and community meals.

The appeal also supports The Salvation Army’s Townsville Recovery Centre.

The centre offers medicated community withdrawal management and detoxification support.

It also provides residential rehabilitation for people experiencing serious harm from alcohol or other drug use.

By The Numbers

  • The Red Shield Appeal is in its 62nd year and aims to raise $41 million nationally.
  • The Salvation Army hopes to recruit 15,000 volunteers across Australia for this year’s appeal.
  • Last year, The Salvation Army helped one person every 17 seconds through more than 400 centres and 2,000 services.

Local Impact

The appeal is about practical help close to home.

Money raised will support people across Townsville and surrounding areas.

That includes locals facing financial stress, food insecurity, homelessness, addiction and other serious pressures.

People can help by volunteering at local shopping centres and other locations.

They can also door knock, fundraise online, organise a collection at work, school or a sporting event, or donate directly.

Major Dorman said the work relies on community backing.

“There is no better way to support those doing it tough than by donating or volunteering with us this year. We can’t do our work in the community without you, so we are calling on people to partner with The Salvation Army this Red Shield Appeal and see the powerful transformation that takes place when we come together to support our fellow Aussies in need,” she said.

Zoom In

The Townsville Recovery Centre is one of the local services supported through the appeal.

Its work focuses on people experiencing significant harm from alcohol or other drug use.

The service offers withdrawal management, detoxification support and residential rehabilitation.

The wider Red Shield Appeal also helps fund emergency relief.

For people in crisis, that can mean help with fuel, food, meals and basic household needs.

Zoom Out

Across Australia, The Salvation Army’s work reaches people through homelessness, family and domestic violence, youth support, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial hardship and other services.

Last year, the organisation provided more than 1.74 million sessions of care to over 228,000 people in need.

It also provided more than one million nights of safe accommodation.

More than 1.4 million meals were given to people who accessed its homelessness services.
