What’s happening?
Townsville will host the next stop on the PBR Australia calendar after a major North Queensland result in Cairns.
Mareeba’s Kurt Shephard won the PBR Australia Monster Energy Cairns Invitational in front of a sold-out crowd, strengthening his place as Australia’s number one bull rider.
Shephard’s Cairns win strengthens his position as Australia’s number one bull rider. It also keeps the focus firmly on North Queensland, with local and regional cowboys playing a major role in the season.
Rockhampton’s Caiden Sandilands finished runner-up in Cairns, while North Queensland rising talent Leith Malone also made a strong mark.
Why it matters?
The Townsville event arrives at an important point in the national title race.
Shephard has extended his lead at the top of the PBR Australia National Standings, while several Queensland riders remain close to the front. That gives local fans a strong reason to follow the action this Saturday.
Townsville is also more than a single stop on the calendar. The city will host the PBR Australia Grand Finals on Friday, 13 November and Saturday, 14 November at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
That makes this weekend’s event a key lead-in for one of the sport’s biggest Australian fixtures later this year.
Local Impact
The Touring Pro Division event will bring PBR Australia into Reid Park as part of the NTI Townsville 500 program.
It adds another major sporting drawcard to a busy weekend in the city and gives fans a chance to see national-level bull riding without leaving North Queensland.
The event also keeps momentum in the region after Cairns hosted a sold-out Invitational. With Townsville also locked in for the Grand Finals, North Queensland remains central to the PBR Australia season.
For local supporters, the focus will be on how Shephard, Sandilands, Malone and the wider field perform after such a strong Cairns showing.
By The Numbers
The Cairns Invitational gave Townsville fans a clear look at the riders shaping the season.
- Shephard finished with an aggregate score of 174.90 points, collecting 254 event points and more than $21,000 in prizemoney.
- Sandilands finished second on 173.40 points after scoring 89.30 points aboard Last Post from Dunne Bulls.
- Shephard now leads the national standings with 1,607.00 points, sitting 328.50 points ahead of Brazil’s Keny Roger de Oliveira.
Zoom In
Shephard’s Cairns performance showed why he remains the rider to beat.
The Mareeba cowboy went 2-for-2 across the night and held off a strong field to win the buckle. Only Shephard and Sandilands covered both bulls, which made the result even tighter.
Sandilands came close to taking the win after producing the biggest ride of the night. His 89.30-point Championship Round ride brought the Cairns crowd to its feet, but Shephard’s full event total kept him in front.
Malone also gave North Queensland fans a strong moment in Round 1. He scored 86.10 points aboard Cowboy Way from Kleier Bucking Bulls.
On the bull side, El Chappo from Dittmann Bucking Bulls claimed YETI Bull of the Night with a 44.70-point bull score.
Zoom Out
Queensland riders are strongly placed as the season moves from Cairns to Townsville.
The current PBR Australia National Standings are led by Shephard from Mareeba. Keny Roger de Oliveira from São Paulo, Brazil sits second, followed by Ethan Coster from Miriam Vale.
Zane Hall from Athol is fourth, while Donnie Rutherfurd from Mount Isa rounds out the top five.
The wider season will continue through Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Caboolture, Hawkesbury, Coffs Harbour, Orange, Mackay and Tamworth before returning to Townsville for the Grand Finals.
