Spotlight on Rural Health this November

National Rural Health Month

What’s Happening?

November is National Rural Health Month, an initiative led by the National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) to bring attention to the healthcare disparities and successes within Australia’s rural, regional, and remote communities.

This month, the Alliance will be sharing stories that highlight both the barriers to healthcare access and the efforts of healthcare champions who are making a positive impact.

Why it Matters

The gap in health outcomes between rural and urban Australians remains a significant concern.

According to Susi Tegen, the Alliance Chief Executive, “We all know that Australia’s rural, regional and remote communities experience poorer health outcomes compared to their urban counterparts.” The challenges faced by rural Australians are compounded by an underspend in healthcare funding, with rural residents receiving $848 less per person annually.

This funding shortfall has contributed to a $6.55 billion gap, despite rural industries providing approximately 80% of Australia’s exports and 90% of its fresh food.

By the Numbers

  • $848: Average annual healthcare funding gap per rural Australian.
  • $6.55 billion: Nationwide healthcare funding underspend for rural communities.
  • 80%: Rural industries’ share of Australia’s exports.
  • 90%: Rural areas’ contribution to fresh food markets.

Zoom In

Rural Australians encounter a triple disadvantage in healthcare: poor social determinants of health, limited access to services, and increased costs for both access and delivery.

Despite these challenges, rural communities have shown resilience, with innovative solutions emerging to tackle healthcare barriers.

Zoom Out

National Rural Health Month will showcase the dedication of rural healthcare workers and advocates who are working towards sustainable healthcare solutions.

This month, the Alliance’s social media accounts and the hashtags #NationalRuralHealthMonth and #NRHM24 will feature daily stories that bring to light the experiences and achievements of rural Australians.

Local Impact

The National Rural Health Alliance, comprising 53 national organisations, is committed to enhancing healthcare for over 7 million Australians in rural and remote areas.

The Alliance’s membership spans Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sectors, healthcare professionals, service providers, educators, and students, all working towards a common goal of healthcare equity.

What to look for next

As National Rural Health Month progresses, the Alliance encourages everyone to engage with these stories of resilience, and to advocate for long-term healthcare reforms that will support rural and remote communities in Australia.
