What’s Happening?

On Saturday, 2 August, CareFlight visited Townsville to deliver a complimentary simulated trauma care training session. The workshop was provided to local health and emergency service professionals, first responders and volunteers. It formed part of CareFlight’s long-running mission to deliver trauma care workshops to communities across Australia.

The training focused on improving local resilience, enhancing emergency preparedness, and supporting better health outcomes for the region.

Why It Matters

Emergencies often stretch local health services to their limits. In many cases, the first people on scene are not paramedics, but community members. CareFlight’s training prepares these individuals to respond effectively in those first few minutes, which can be critical for survival.

The workshops are hands-on and scenario-based, using realistic medical mannequins and simulated accident scenes. Participants gain not only life-saving skills but also improved leadership, teamwork, communication and situational awareness, all essential in high-pressure emergency situations.

Acting Head of Education and Training, Tariq Sappideen, said early intervention is often key in emergencies. “The first few minutes after an incident can be the difference between life and death. First responders play a vital role, often arriving before medical professionals. By partnering with local organisations, we’re reinforcing the links in the chain of survival to ensure better care is available as soon as the incident occurs,” said Sappideen.

He added that CareFlight’s free workshops are a boost for emergency services and a reflection of their commitment to resilience in regional communities. “CareFlight is proud to offer this essential training, supported by government grants and community fundraising. Our goal is to empower locals with the skills and confidence needed to create a safer community.”

The training was delivered by CareFlight’s experienced team of doctors, paramedics and nurses. Sessions covered a wide range of trauma care skills, from patient triage and managing complex injuries to conducting effective handovers to medical professionals.

The workshops are specifically designed for first responders and community members who are often first on the scene.

Local Impact

Townsville’s health workers, volunteers and first responders left the training better prepared for real-world emergencies. With stronger skills and improved preparedness, the community can expect better coordination and faster care when it matters most.
