AFCM sets record-breaking milestones for Queensland Tourism

The Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) celebrated a record-breaking year in 2024, showcasing ten days of exceptional performances by world-renowned chamber musicians in Townsville-Gurambilbarra from 26 July to 4 August 2024.

The festival attracted thousands of visitors from Australia and abroad, generating unprecedented economic returns for Queensland.

  • Economic Impact: $3.79 million in direct economic benefit, with 91% spent in Townsville.
  • Total Spending: $19.98 million in Queensland, a remarkable 114% increase from 2023.
  • Attendance: 22,106 across all events, up 31% from the previous year.
  • Visitor Nights: 12,593 direct visitor nights, with an average stay of 10.9 nights per attendee.
  • Audience Satisfaction: 95% of ticketholders believe AFCM adds value to the region, and 96% would recommend it.

AFCM Executive Director Ricardo Peach expressed pride in the festival’s record-breaking year. “Overall, the direct and incremental expenditure generated by the Festival was estimated at $3.79 million, up 18%, with 91% of the spending in the Townsville region,” said Peach. “This is absolutely brilliant news, particularly in a year when so many music events and festivals have struggled. We are so proud of the AFCM, and its continued appeal to fans and artists from around the world.”

The Festival encourages a sense of intimacy and engagement, offering opportunities for attendees to interact with the performers through forums, masterclasses and special events. This creates a rare and immersive experience, allowing enthusiasts to delve into the intricacies of chamber music and gain insights into the creative process.”

Townsville’s AFCM has attracted global audiences for 34 years.

The 2024 festival, under Liebeck’s direction, featured over 35 artists, including 10 international and 20 Australian musicians, with 14 artists making their AFCM debut.

Highlights included two world premieres and performances by luminaries like Stephen Johnson, Piers Lane, and Roderick Williams.

What to Look for Next

Next year’s Australian Festival of Chamber Music will run from 25 July to 2 August 2025. Tickets go on sale on 3 March 2025, with early access for AFCM Friends starting 3 February.
