What’s Happening?
Townsville will host the Junior State Cup North in 2027 and 2029 following a renewed partnership between three sporting and government organisations.
Queensland Touch Football, North Queensland Touch Football and Townsville City Council confirmed the agreement following the success of this year’s tournament.
The deal secures one of Queensland’s largest junior touch football competitions for North Queensland, reinforcing Townsville’s role as a major sporting destination.
It also provides certainty for organisers and young athletes, with preparations already underway for the 2027 event.
Why It Matters
The agreement strengthens Townsville’s long-standing relationship with Queensland Touch Football while supporting junior sporting development across North Queensland.
For young athletes, hosting the competition locally means greater access to high-quality competition and opportunities to progress through representative pathways.
Queensland Touch Football CEO Greg Denny welcomed the continued partnership and recognised the council’s commitment to junior sport.
“We are thrilled to extend our partnership with Townsville City Council. Their continued support helps deliver an outstanding experience for our young athletes and their families year after year,” Denny said.
He explained that the organisation’s broader development strategy focuses on providing opportunities for regional athletes, coaches and referees.
“North Queensland players have access to a range of affiliate, regional and state-based development opportunities through school, representative and emerging player pathways. Our focus is making sure regional athletes, coaches and referees can progress through the sport and compete at the highest levels,” he said.
North Queensland Touch Football President Renee Marsh also welcomed the agreement, highlighting the importance of securing future tournaments.
“Townsville has proven itself to be an exceptional host for Junior State Cup North. Securing the event for 2027 and 2029 provides certainty for our region and creates exciting opportunities for young players, coaches, referees and volunteers across North Queensland,” Marsh said.
Local Impact
The Junior State Cup North brings economic benefits to Townsville while encouraging greater community involvement in junior sport.
Visiting teams, officials and supporters generate activity for accommodation providers, hospitality venues and other local businesses throughout the tournament.
Deputy Mayor and Townsville 2032 Legacy Working Group Chair Suzy Batkovic described the agreement as a significant result for the city.
“Securing the Junior State Cup North for 2027 and 2029 is a fantastic result for Townsville and a testament to the strong partnership we’ve built with Queensland Touch Football and North Queensland Touch Football over the years,” Cr Batkovic said. “These events will bring thousands of players, families and supporters to our city, providing a boost for local businesses and showcasing Townsville as a premier destination for major sporting events. They will also create more opportunities for local young athletes to compete, develop their skills and be inspired through sport.”
Beyond the immediate economic benefits, local touch football associations have reported growing interest from players, families and volunteers.
Denny said the enthusiasm surrounding the competition presents an opportunity to strengthen junior participation throughout the region.
“Junior State Cup North continues to generate strong enthusiasm across the region, with local affiliates reporting increased interest from players, families and volunteers,” he said. “We’re working closely with local touch football associations to turn the excitement of the event into lasting engagement and long-term growth for the sport.”
