What’s Happening?
Powerlink has worked with the Australian Defence Force to strengthen protection around Queensland’s electricity transmission network.
Through Austral Shield 26, organisations tested cyber and physical security responses at substations near Gladstone and Cairns. The Queensland activities formed part of a wider ADF-led exercise involving Defence and government agencies.
Why It Matters
Electricity moves from generators through Powerlink’s transmission network before reaching local distribution networks across Queensland.

Powerlink Chief Executive Dr Seán Mc Goldrick said protecting the transmission network was important for communities across Queensland.
“Queensland’s electricity transmission network is a vital link between generators and local distribution networks, so protecting its security is critical,” Dr Mc Goldrick said.
He said working directly with partner organisations allowed Powerlink to examine its procedures across several possible situations.
“Exercises like Austral Shield allow Powerlink to work closely with Defence, government agencies and industry partners to test our procedures for a range of potential cyber and physical security scenarios.”
Austral Shield is one part of Powerlink’s wider work to protect the transmission network and maintain electricity supply.
