What’s Happening?

Police have charged a group of teenagers and adults following an overnight operation involving stolen vehicles across Townsville.

The operation followed the alleged theft of a black Isuzu MU-X from Sunderland Street, Garbutt, on Monday, 15 June.

Police allege the vehicle was parked in a driveway at 1.44 pm while a woman stood nearby. A baby was secured inside the vehicle in a car seat.

The offenders allegedly entered the Isuzu and drove away before stopping further along Sunderland Street. They then placed the baby, still secured in the car seat, on the footpath and fled again.

Nobody was physically injured, while paramedics assessed the baby as a precaution. Police searched the surrounding area but could not initially locate the vehicle.

With help from POLAIR, officers found the Isuzu in a Charters Towers Road carpark around 9.45 pm. A white Ford Ranger, stolen from Railway Estate on 14 June, was parked beside it.

The Ford Ranger was engulfed in flames when officers arrived, although the fire was extinguished soon afterwards. Police then received reports of other stolen vehicles being driven across Townsville overnight.

Officers coordinated ground patrols, air support and tyre deflation devices during the operation. Several people were arrested, although police have not confirmed any connection to the Garbutt incident.

Why It Matters

The Garbutt incident was particularly serious because a baby remained inside the Isuzu when it was allegedly stolen.

Although the baby was not injured, the incident required an immediate response from police and paramedics. It also developed into a wider operation involving several allegedly stolen vehicles across Townsville.

Police have stressed that the charges currently laid are unrelated to the Garbutt incident. Investigators are still working to identify those responsible for taking the Isuzu.

Local Impact

The police operation covered several Townsville suburbs and involved vehicles reported stolen from Garbutt and Railway Estate.

The recovery of the vehicles may assist owners affected by recent thefts. However, the investigation into the Sunderland Street incident remains open.

  • Ten people, including eight teenagers and two adults, were charged following the overnight Townsville police operation.
  • Seven stolen vehicles were recovered, including the Isuzu MU-X connected to the continuing Garbutt investigation.
  • Five vehicles were disabled using tyre deflation devices, while police laid 19 charges unrelated to the Garbutt incident.

Zoom Out

The arrests followed reports of stolen vehicles being driven around Townsville during the night of 15 June.

Police combined POLAIR support with ground patrols and tyre deflation devices to stop vehicles and make arrests. The operation included vehicles linked to separate theft reports across the city.

What To Look For Next?

Police will continue examining whether any of those arrested were connected to the Garbutt vehicle theft.

Further charges may follow once investigators identify those responsible for taking the Isuzu and leaving the baby on the footpath.

Court proceedings will also continue following the appearances scheduled for today and 19 June.
