QLD cracks down on lifejacket use

What’s happening?

Starting 1 July 2025, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) will begin fining recreational boaters who fail to comply with new lifejacket laws that took effect late last year. The $333 fine will apply across Queensland’s waters.

Why it matters

“These laws are aimed at making boating a safer activity for the more than 1 million Queenslanders with recreational boating licences, and their passengers,” MSQ stated. The timing coincides with the winter school holidays, when marine activity increases.

Local Impact

Queensland’s boating community, recreational fishers, families, solo skippers, paddlers, and holidayers are all affected by the new laws. Whether boating on rivers, bays, dams or coastal waters, wearing the right lifejacket at the right time is now a legal requirement. The laws aim to create safer waterways and ensure everyone returns home safely.

By the Numbers

  • 64 deaths in Queensland boating accidents (2019–2023), with just 5 victims wearing lifejackets.

  • $333 fine now issued for any breach of the updated rules.

  • Laws apply to 1 million+ Queensland boat licence holders.

Zoom In

Lifejackets are mandatory when:

  • Boating alone or with children under 12 in open boats <4.8m, underway.

  • Boating at night, in open boats <4.8m.

  • Crossing coastal bars in any open boat or open area.

  • Children aged 1–11 years, in open boats or open sections of any vessel underway.

They are also required when crossing bars on craft like:

  • Lasers, herons, and other small sailing craft

  • Pedal boats, inflatable rafts, rowboats, sea/surf kayaks (Note: Surf Life Saving surfboats are excluded.)

Zoom Out

For the past six months, MSQ focused on raising awareness. Now, the emphasis is on compliance. “Wearing a lifejacket is one of the simplest ways to save a life on the water,” MSQ reiterated in its notice.

What to look for next?

Maritime Safety Queensland will increase patrols and compliance checks across the state, especially during busy holiday periods.  Boaties are urged to check Maritime Safety Queensland’s website for full compliance details and approved lifejacket types.
