What’s happening?

After 35 years in Townsville, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) is preparing to relocate to Cairns from 2026, marking a bold new chapter for one of the world’s most celebrated classical music festivals.

The announcement follows record-breaking success in 2024 and reflects AFCM’s commitment to growth, enhanced experiences, and broader community reach — all while remaining proudly in northern Queensland.

“This is not a departure from northern Queensland – it is an evolution within it,” said AFCM Chair Mary Jo Capps, AM. “We are deeply grateful to Townsville for 35 extraordinary years of support and look forward to celebrating that legacy in full during our 2025 Festival from 25 July to 2 August.”

Why it matters?

This strategic move supports sustainable growth, improved access for artists and patrons, and the delivery of expanded programs like international collaborations and youth development initiatives. Cairns was selected for its modern infrastructure, walkable venues, strong tourism appeal, and regional appetite for cultural connection.

“We look forward to growing the Festival’s impact even further from its new home in Cairns – a city with world-class tourism appeal, fit-for-purpose venues, and a strong appetite for cultural connection,” said Capps.

Local Impact

The relocation promises a significant cultural and economic boost to Cairns, while honouring Townsville’s enduring legacy.

“We are incredibly proud to be part of a new chapter of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music,” said Cairns Mayor, Cr Amy Eden. “This move is more than a cultural milestone – it’s a regional celebration.”

“The Festival’s commitment to free community concerts, youth outreach, and global artistic exchange aligns with our vision for a more connected, creative, and vibrant Cairns,” she added.

By the Numbers:

  • Over 2,000 concerts presented by AFCM since its launch in 1991.

  • The 2024 Festival broke attendance records and expanded youth and community programs.

  • In 2025, 36 musicians will perform in Townsville, including 11 international artists and 6 world premieres.

Zoom In

The 2025 AFCM Festival, set for 25 July to 2 August in Townsville, promises to be a powerful farewell. Artistic Director Jack Liebeck has curated a spirited program featuring:

  • 30+ concerts including 6 world premieres

  • 11 international artists (2 making Australian debuts)

  • 13 AFCM first-time performers

  • 3 acclaimed ensembles

  • 2 Island concerts and deep dives into classical music feuds

“This year is a heartfelt celebration of past, present, and future, filled with music, memories, and milestone moments,” said Capps. “Townsville will always be a part of our story. We honour its enormous contribution and look forward to a farewell year filled with gratitude, great music and a standing ovation for the city that raised us.”

Zoom Out

Looking ahead to 2026, AFCM’s new home in Cairns opens possibilities for:

  • Increased national and international access

  • Expanded Pathways Program for emerging artists, supported by The Ian Potter Foundation and The Donald and Joan Wilson Foundation

  • Integrated festival experience where patrons can walk between concerts, hotels, restaurants, and public spaces

As Capps explained, “The essence of AFCM – its extraordinary music, passionate audiences and top-tier artists from around the world – remains unchanged.”
